Chapter 29

And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God.

—Ephesians 4:30

By August, Johnnie Mae was back on the road doing another round of book signings. While in Michigan, she ended up finding the most perfect wedding dress. She also bought the “best woman’s” (as Landris dubbed her one adult attendant) and the flower girls’ dresses. Landris had a confirmed 176-guest list and everything was booked and ready. Tiffany was pleased with how things were really flowing together. “I prayed the prayer of petition, and now I thank God daily it’s already done,” Pastor Landris told her.

“Thanksgiving is the voice of faith,” Pastor Landris said when she inquired further. “I learned that from my mentor years ago, and it’s true. In the natural, when we believe something is already done, we thank the person for having done it. I asked, I believe I have already received—which in truth I have received in the spirit world—so I thank God every day that it is done. ‘Thank You, Lord, this wedding is anointed. Thank You, Lord it is blessed and it is a blessing right now.’ See?”

Tiffany laughed. “Yes. I see. And right now I need to bless some people with some money they can see. So, do you want me to stop by your house and pick up the check?”

George’s thoughts switched to Thomas, who had managed to recover at least some of his money. Whatever other risky things he’d done, fortunately he had put some of the money in more secure things with maturity dates of six months to a year. Some CDs and Treasury bills had just matured and were promptly handed over to George—or more accurately, most of it promptly handed over to the IRS for the payment of his tax bill.

“Almost six million dollars for taxes,” Thomas had said. “Look, if you let me invest this money, there’s a stock I know can make a quick return on in a few weeks. It’s called Enron, and it’s a hot stock. I’m telling you, you can’t lose with it. People are making money hand over fist.”

“No, Thomas. If this tax bill goes unpaid, you are most likely going to jail, not me. So, you should be the first person happy that there’s money to pay it,” George said.

“But I’m telling you, George: I’ve got a real good feeling about Enron. Real good.”

“Is it a Holy Ghost-anointed feeling?”

“Well, no.”

“Then, I don’t want to hear it. Because the Holy Spirit is advising me to save you from going to jail, by rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s.” George smiled.

“Okay, but any other money we get after this, you should invest it and give me a chance to recoup some more of what I’ve messed up.”

“Any other money after this that comes in, my giving to the church will be come first, and I’ll seek God’s face about what to do with the other,” George said as he walked away.

Johnnie Mae called Landris to see what else she needed to do for the wedding.
